Demo features

We've built two demo shops where you can:

Shopify is very flexible, it can help you get started online, expand your current shop or scale up and support you as your business does more online. Our demos aim to give you a flavour of the possibilities and show you how we can help.

Have a read through the features on the demos and try the links to see them in action in our demo shops.

Product options

Shopify allows up to 3 different product options, for example size, colour and style. Our shop demos allow you to see some of the standard ways Shopify displays products and more advanced display options we have developed for our clients. Follow the links below to try the features.

Automatic discounts

Shopify makes setting up discounts very straight forward. It can be done for a single product, a group of products, or at order level.
Discounts can be set up as

Only one automatic discount can be active at any one time on your shop, but you can schedule different discounts for different times.

Standard functionality - clothes shop demo

Options to choose a store pickup or local delivery are given on the checkout page

Store pickup is set for our location in Balmedie, and will be avilable to pickup from 24 hours after the order was placed

Local delivery is set for a 30 mile radius of Balmedie, so to test this out use an Aberdeen postcode, for example AB25 1EB and make sure your order is over £10

Details of the shopify app can be found here Shopify Local Delivery

Create your own test order
Follow our easy guide to creating a test order to see how the checkout works using our demo shops

Creating a test order

1. Shopping cart

The shopping cart, bag or basket can be found at the top right on all pages in the Shopify shop. This is becoming the standard place for this on most websites. As a customer shops the cart will show the number of products added. Along the top you will also find:

*These can be changed, or switched on or off depending on your needs
Along the bottom of the page you will see links to a refund policy, terms of service and a privacy policy among other links, which can also all be changed, or switched on or off.
In the shopping cart customers can add a note/special instructions to the seller

2. Browsing and selecting goods

You can view all products in a category by selecting the product category, for example mens or womens in the clothes shop demo
Clicking on a product image or name you will take you to the product page. In the product page you can try selecting product options, for example size, weight, colour, style and the quantity.
When you are happy with your product selection add the product to the cart by clicking "Add to cart". If you want to add another product navigate to a product page and add to cart again, the number of products in the cart is shown on the top right of the page.

3. Checkout

Now you have products in your shopping cart choose to "check out" from the cart page
The check out page has 3 elements:

4. Paying for your demo order

No payment will be taken by entering details into the demo payment system

Why use Shopify for your online shop
Find out why we chose to work with Shopify and the benefits it can bring to your business

Why Shopify?

Our goal

During lockdown we decided to spend time researching different ways we could build online shops for small businesses. We felt that there would be an increased demand for businesses to go online and that Doric Design was in a good position to help our fellow business owners get the most out of their online shops, whether it was venturing online for the first time or looking to expand their online work.

We found that today there are many different offerings out there, all with their own pros and cons.

Our criteria

We wanted to find a system that met these criteria

Our method

We started by finding out what offerings might fit our criteria, which included

Magento Open Source IONOS 1&1 one.com Opencart
Shopify WIX WooCommerce Big Commerce
Squarespace Etsy Shop Blocks 3dcart
Volusion EKM Zen Cart Shop Wired
EBay Amazon

We then turned to review sites to help us whittle down the list, which included

Mobile Transaction 7 best ecommerce platforms for small businesses in the UK
Website Builder Expert 10 Best Ecommerce Website Builders For Small Business
Merchant Machine 21 Top Ecommerce Platforms For UK Businesses: 2020 Comparison
Startups The 6 best ecommerce platforms for small businesses in 2020

We chose 5 that we felt Doric Design could bring value to as web design company

For each of these we built and tested demo shops

We looked through documentation and customer forums, trying out customisation options, creating orders, paying for orders, shipping orders and looking at the sales statistics

Our conclusion

For us Shopify had the best balance of functionality, ease of use, personalisation, stability, security and scalability with great documentation and support at a fair price. And while they are based in Canada, they have a large customer base in the UK.

In their system there is a clear separation between system's core functionality and 3rd party apps. This means that the integrity of the shop is strong, it can function away for the extra apps. The app developers themselves are also well supported by Shopify and apps vetted by Shopify before being offered to customers building shops, making the job of supporting customers faster and easier for Shopify.

We found the documentation thorough with online training courses and guides for both customers and partners, such as ourselves. The community forums are busy and friendly making them an excellent place to find and offer support.

As a Shopify partner there is a clear pathway for us to use when working with you from initial discussion, gathering your shop's requirements, building and handing over your shop to you. Based on our experience with lots of online projects we know that many clients want us to stay involved to help, especially as they get used to a new way of working online. Shopify has thought about this and allows us to stay involved if you want us to.
